Ummm. Aren't shurikens Japanese?

Apart from that the design is just lazy, lazy, lazy. Exact same dragon just slightly modified all over the place.

Very unique... everything. I like it. Agreed on the laziness using the same dragon though.

The project itself seems very well thought through. Anybody heard of this guy before?

We'll the Facebook link is not working for me and there seems to be a lot of bad grammar here and there.

Other than that cool deck for sure.

These look like Mahjong tiles, maybe that's the look they were going for. I'm not feeling these.

Should we go ahead and put this in the Kickstarter scams list now or wait and see if it funds?

I kind of wish the courts had been the first image. I was scrolling down thinking "this is kind of a cool deck" then BAM stock Asian images with a photoshop etch effect.

I also had the impression that the courts look like stock images. Do you know this for certain, or is that your opinion?

In any case, stock images do not automatically equal a "scam".

I'm not that thrilled by this deck to begin with and won't back it anyway, but the stock images to me are just a tad boring, not necessarily a glaring red flag.

Exactly.

Going with graphics that aren't original art is definitely laziness, and at best boring. A 10 minute trip through photoshop doesn't buy you out of that.

Here, I do like the sunken effect with the pips and I've grabbed a two deck early bird while I decide whether or not that's enough of a reason to go in on this. I imagine that in the next 29 days something more interesting will come along and I'll switch my pledge to that...

That remains to be seen. This person is obviously not a native English-speaking person, and as such (I'm Danish), he does rather well. The Chinese symbolism looks great, unfortunately I'm not the person to interpret it.

I did the same, and we'll all watch to see if it smells funny(er) before the clock runs out and we're locked down. Pricing is reasonable, and it doesn't have the fishy smell some projects have had lately, it's a "wait and see" for me for now. I think we've all grown to have a jaundiced eye with the scams of late.

I love Asian-themed artwork and decks. And at first glance I was intrigued. But the more I looked at it the more I think it just falls short on almost every aspect. So close, yet so far.

Personally I'm lumping this project in the same pile as the Persian Empire ones. It's possible that it's not a scam, but I won't be the one putting up my money to find out for sure.

I sincerely hope you're not the creator of this deck, or are even affiliated with him in any way.

Yeah he's clearly not doing it for the money at the prices he's been selling at.

Unfortunately if a couple of people change their mind or their credit cards don't work, he'll be screwed somewhat but not much.

Criticism is everywhere. If an artist cant handle it, perhaps they shouldn't make their work public.

Yes Agreed, but why put it so far down? just a person trying to share something with the world is a good thing right? so why try to destroy it so much as you guys do ?

Some people while trying to be critical, can seem like they are just being an asshole. Most of the time it's not intentional. Like your comment calling people muppets. A little eloquence goes a long way.

I can't really speak for them or this place as a whole, I haven't been here that long. But any comments by people regarding their opinion of a deck, wont sway those who want it. If you have to look to others to tell you what to buy and what not to, why would you be buying them in the first place.

A deck that succeeds will succeed on its own merits, not because of the thumbs up or down a few people give it on a forum.

Putting words on a website doesn't do much destruction, especially not in a forum. McSpazzy said it best:
McSpazzy wrote:A deck that succeeds will succeed on its own merits, not because of the thumbs up or down a few people give it on a forum.
As an artist I would recommend you try to find some way of dealing with criticism. I'm not going to pretend I know how it feels to have one's creative work be put down by random people, but not being able to deal with bad reviews is just bad for business. Either try to distance yourself from it and realize that the opinions of a few does not make a big difference, or take it out on something that doesn't do any harm like hitting a punch bag or something. Then after you've dealt with it you can reply in a calm and objective matter and try to get as much constructive feedback as you can.

See, once you try to sell people stuff you become something more than a person (to your customers at least), and everything you do publicly will be judged by anyone who are considering buying from you. Whatever information is out there about you (facebook, personal website etc) doesn't do that much to describe how you are as a person and a business, your actions and words do.

If you are looking for honest criticism, you've come to the right place. If you're looking for a simple pat on the back..well, I don't think you'll find any place like that. A lot of the users here (including myself) don't pull any punches when it comes to voicing our opinion on a deck. Be it good or bad, regardless if the designer is a multi deck hot shot or a debutant.

Sure me might give the impression that we're just a bunch of bitter old farts shooting down any project that doesn't please us; and regardless of whether we choose our words carefully or not...it's done with the intention of improving a project. We've seen many decks come and go, some fantastic, some not so much and others just horrendous. With their equal share of success and failure amongst them.

Even so, regardless of what ANY of us might think..the design itself will have the final say. WE did not shoot down your clockwork deck. You cancelled several times and the last time was unsuccessful. We are a small community. It's the masses who were simply not interested. We have very little sway over public opinion.

We're not running a card mafia here.

Don't get too happy, though the deck is funded, it's not in people's hands yet. A project can still be unsuccessful when funded because of unsuspecting stuff.

Think I'll settle for my bricks of red and blue Emperors. I studied this deck too but couldn't pull the trigger on it. And I wouldn't gloat about it getting funded, there's been pure junk that's passed that test. That said, I'm tickled for the guy on getting his deck through.

You'll find a mixed bag here. Some decks do get criticized badly, other decks the members are split on, while others get pure excitement all the way around. Some deck creators have taken the criticism here and vastly improved their product or at the very least tweaked their deck for the better, so criticism does serve a purpose. I can tell you part of the fun being on UC is communicating with deck creators during the course of their design, often before it even gets to KS, and watch it achieve fruition. You feel like you have skin in the game, and if you can run this gauntlet you've probably done a damn good job, lol.

Well i didnt like the deck, still dont like the deck. I think both the concept and execution of the deck are pretty awful. The worst thing about the entire deck is the chinese font they are using, downright terrible.

But i guess enough people like the deck and its their choice. Kudos to the guy who didnt give up.

I still think there are significant warning signs on this project. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but the reason I didn't pledge is that I don't think it will come to fulfillment. All sorts of special deals thrown out there to reach the goal, including 4 decks for £10 (add on for some levels) or 6 decks and a coin (with free shipping) for £30. I really hope it does happen.

I absolutely agree, creators who want to sell their creations need a thick skin. When I was designing decks, I got buttloads of feedback. Not all of it was very complimentary, and that's fine - in the end, do you want someone who will lie to you, or someone who will help you be better? I changed stuff on my decks based on feedback I got here and at The Discourse - and in some cases, I also decided that I liked what I had. Confidence and an ability to be honest with yourself are key to becoming a better artist and creating a better design. I appreciate all the feedback I got. Even when I disagreed with it, it was helpful.
