Edgy Brothers Royal House Playing Cards FUNDED

Unread post by edgybros »

Hey everybody! We wanted to give you all a teaser for our new Kickstarter campaign, launching sometime in the next week and a half. It's the closest we've come to a traditional deck, done Edgy Brothers' style, of course. Have a look:

It's called Edgy Brothers' Royal House Playing Cards by USPCC, and it's basically a story between two royal houses, the Rose House and the Sun House. We plan on using metallic inks for the deck backs and are considering a limited gilded run for each design. But we have to get some numbers back from USPCC before we commit to that.

Really liking the theme! Those backs are nice. :)

Since it's the story of two royal houses, it begs the question: how come they're pretty identical?
Have you considered differentiating the courts some more?

I think the blue deck feels a little like the back design didn't want to get scrapped so a one deck project turned to two decks. :)

Edgy = Quality - so I'm excited for this of course.
The court cards have such expressive faces.
QoH looks so sad.
Thanks for the teaser!

The backs look like a deck that starts with a 'H' but I won't name names. I like the red one though.

The Good:
The court cards look FANTASTIC!

The OK:
The color scheme on the backs looks like version 1.

The Absolutely Horrible:
The "K" for the Kings is unreadable. Please change!

That's nice to hear. I think you have yourself a potential HUGE $$$ winner here.

While fancy, please make the A, K, Q and J legible for non playing card collecting people. If normal people can read it easily, the poker games go much smoother, instead of, "Let's just get a normal Bicycle deck."

Whether it's my dad or co workers, they always wanna play with the normal ass Bicycle cards and not with cool custom cards, talking about they can't see the cards. I agree with those Ks, they look like Rs instead. I hope the tuck of these are good.

Yes please on the legible / playable. I opened a deck of Borderline last night to play with friends - the numbers/suits were so small it was hard to organize my hand with any speed and quickly tell the difference between hearts and diamonds. I wish more designers took some random friends and played a few hands with their prototypes for playability. I haven't played with the Mardi Gras deck yet and while the filigree in the numbers don't make the super easy to read, the size and shape of your design make MG a playable deck.

Seems like I'm in the same boat as you guys. It doesn't have to be Jumbo index-like decks, but the bigger the letters, and the bigger the suits, the better. Even when they are big, there is still lots of room for the art.

I also like the trend of decks now having big, custom Aces for all four suits. The Ace of Spades needs company, and it's just cool.

I don't think the discussion was on size. Too big indices hurts playability in its own way, making the cards harder to spot when they're behind other cards (in the hand). Sprouts will back me up on this 8-)

Oh crap, Yes... There seems to be a sweet spot in the size. I've notice some ppl making the RAnk and suit index larger so they don't have to include the suit indicator. It's still in the sweet spot and works. I guess if you can get 13 cards in your hand that is good enough...

Edit: Have to agree. It looks like an "R"oi more than a "K"ing...But of course I look at Jack as a Knave.

we've listened to your feedback and we wanted to show you the revamped "k" on the king. we used the same font style for the queen. we think it's much more readable now. thanks for that!

now, one last question and we really want your opinion on this - we are trying to decide between running a one deck or two deck campaign. if we run a one deck campaign, we'll go with the rose deck and offer a limited number of gilded versions of it as well. it would mean having a lower funding goal but not giving backers as much to choose from in terms of decks. but if we did both the rose deck and the sun deck in a two deck campaign, while we could offer gilded versions of both, we don't have time to create completely new courts for the sun deck. however, if the rose deck is successful, we can offer the sun deck as its own campaign after the rose campaign, we'd have time to create completely new courts, making it a completely different deck.

so, what would you like to see - a one deck campaign with the rose deck and a limited gilded version, or a two deck campaign with the rose and sun deck, both having gilded versions also, but the same courts for both?

we launch next week, so the sooner we can hear from you the better. as always, thanks of the input!

IMO I would go with a 1 deck + gilded campaign. But I must say I much prefer the sun deck over the rose deck. :D
Could the second deck be added as a stretch goal :?:

Given the two choices, I would choose the one deck with the gilded. I really like the idea of the courts being different for each of the decks.

Wow- the indices are MUCH better! As far as the KS campaign(s) goes it's risky no matter what you do. I think a more appropriate question would be, "Do you want different courts for both decks?" If the answer is yes then I'd hold off, draw up some new courts, and run a second campaign for the Sun deck. If the answer is no then do a two deck campaign now. (BTW, my answer: I'd rather get both of these decks delivered at the same time but I'll pledge either way) If the cards are any indication of how nice the tuck will be I think you'll have a solid campaign that should fund. Or at least I'd pledge :)

Yes thank you for the indices change - so much more playable!
I'd be in favor of different courts / 2 campaigns with a smaller goal.
You have a significant following unlike some designers so hopefully will your goal quickly
and will give you time to make the second deck complimentary yet unique.
You could also offer the first deck as add-ons for the second campaign for those late to the game.
And perhaps some other fun add-ons for both decks on the second campaign.
For me, financially the double deck campaigns are stressful - so much money to buy two of each
if there are several campaigns going on at the same time I want to support.
My two cents. Mardi Gras is one of my fav decks right now - so gorgeous - I get lots of comments.
Go Edgy, Go Edgy, Go Edgy :-).

Add my voice to the chorus:

Great update to the indices.

I'd like the two decks to have different courts, and if that means two different, smaller campaigns, then sign me up.

Oh, and I'd like a coin with that, too, please. Making it a stretch goal is totally fine, natch.

Definitely looking forward to the revamped sun deck in the future.

I echo Rouselle on the coins. You can get some excellent coins from the Rose and the blonde guy.

24 different courts in the one style would lend you some cred methinks! Yup, that would be really cool. If it's an option you're considering, do it. I think both campaigns would not have trouble being funded.

What if you could pull off the original RAnk indices on your gilded deck. To me, "R" and "K" mean same thing. Like I said (J)acks and (Kn)aves are the same thing to me. Mistakes show up more in history. Think about it. How many more decks are you planing to make...

Please don't do this. I respectfully think sporouts1115 is out to lunch on this point. K=King, J=Jack and leave the Roi and Knaves to the Europeans and the history side of things. Can't play poker with Roi and Knaves.

Excellent update. I'm not a guilded deck person, but I'd be looking at 6+ decks, depending on the price. Or go the Kings Wild system, with a nice deck, guilded and $5 display decks with plain tucks.

I'd say go for one campaign, rock it and do another one. Make it a series and keep going. There's lots of life in this theme and this style.

We are so grateful for the feedback from all of you. We have taken your notes to heart, and would like to announce that we're launching Royal House Playing Cards (made by USPCC) on Kickstarter on Wednesday, Oct. 14th at Noon PST (3PM EST).

We plan on launching with only the Rose Deck, making this a single deck campaign - our first. We will also offer Gilded decks as well, ordering 500 and offering 400 during the campaign and saving the remainder for inventory, replacements, personal stock, etc. In addition, we plan on this being a limited edition campaign, meaning we're only ordering the decks once, to cover whatever orders we've received during the campaign. Most likely that will mean ordering the standard minimum 2500 deck order (plus the Gilded). Bicycle tends to overprint by a few percent, so that final tally could be in the 2700-2800 range, but for a modestly successful campaign, we're most likely looking at that as the maximum.

If there are any questions, we can answer them here or at info@edgybrothers.com. We've enjoyed great attention and support from the crew here at UC for all our campaigns, and would consider ourselves fortunate for that to continue. Hope to see you guys on Wednesday!
