Isometric Playing Cards

Unread post by siegismyname »

New playing cards that might hit the market soon. All that is known is the name and some pictures of it in action. Created by @kafoosh from IG.

I wonder if that geometric design is going to work as good as the virts deck. I'm no cardist so I can't really picture it out on my own. And those borders look a tad thick.

Yeah, this is definitely a Virtuoso deck knock-off (by the way, I didn't see the Virtuoso Spring/Summer edition deck listed in the list of eligible 2014 deck nominations for the UC Deck of the Year contest). I agree, the borders should be thinner and the colors should be more vibrant.

Is it just me, or is that last picture strange? It looks like someone is doing a Carnahan fan with the cards, but where is the rest of his hand and body?

You can see a bit of flesh (his wrist presumably) on the top edge of the picture.

I'm pretty sure Kenneth is friends with the Virts, so if they had anything against him producing this deck, I think they would already have told him. I like the design though I'm not a huge fan of the colors (not enough contrast in my opinion, I talked to him about that and he said that he tried not to get too close to the Virts deck with the colors and that he might play around with them to get more contrasting colors). I don't think these will visually enhance flourishes as much as the Virts deck but I still like the design and the way it looks in motion. Here are a few examples:

I like this card back. Similar style as Virtuoso's sure, but it's not the same same. All cars start looking like toasters at some point, doesn't keep me from wanting a new version of the toaster cruiser.
TL:DR It's completely up to you.
We can still be friends.
I actually like playing cards.
We live in interesting times.

Only on Indiegogo because Kickstarter is not Singapore friendly.

I'm in on this one - I like the cards, I like the seller. I just wish he would get the exposure it would get on Kickstarter...

When did KS become "not Singapore friendly"? Kai?

No problem if you are pledging, but you cant create a project.

Honestly, id usually support my fellow countrymen, but this deck, is not innovative, its a copy of the virts concept, only that the design is "closed" and theres not much room for geometric designs to be extended/connected. The courts are standard because the guy isnt an artist, maybe if he isnt an artist, he shouldnt produce decks ? Even with EPCC/Legends, i didnt know a goal of $4500 is enough for cards + shipping.

Well *I* think he is an artist. Especially now that he's put something out to be judged artistically! (If the deck gets funded, would he then be an artist?)

Cardistry isn't graphical design, true - and these do look somewhat like a blend of virts/fat boys, true. But that's not a bad choice to emulate or pay homage to.

I'm still in for a few decks to support a passion project, despite the pains of Indiegogo ..

As quoted from the project.
"Will this deck have custom faces?
Nope! While one of the prototypes had custom faces, I felt that the design was lacking, (seeing as I am not really a designer) and also felt that classic faces would be more familiar and useful for magicians and laypeople. So I decided against the use of custom faces!"

Wow, UC has changed a ton since it first started. I don't even recognize the place anymore.

Hey all, Kenneth here. This thread was brought to my attention by a friend and I thought I'd pop by to address some of the questions posted.

Its true that I am not trained to be a designer, but I don't think that I shouldn't be allowed to try my hand at creating a deck. I do understand the concern with how similar it looks to some decks currently on the market, however, I do feel that it is different enough, and offers something new to be able to stand on its own, unlike the "repeated logo" style decks.

On the topic of custom faces, I know for some reason, playing card collectors have this huge love for custom everything. However, I have found in performing both cardistry and magic frequently, that you are able to make things easier to understand to laymen if you use standard faces. To me, anything that enables us to bridge that gap faster is a just way better.

Too often, custom decks are coveted and are never opened. I don't want my deck to be just sitting on some collectors shelf for an eternity. I want it to be used.

Lastly, $4,500 is enough. I think too many people who start a project don't realise that you don't have to sell everything at once. My goal is to get the cards printed. The $4,500 covers the printing and shipping of the cards to me. The bonus of crowd funding is that the funds used to print the decks comes in the form of "pre-orders". This enables you to sell off a percentage of your decks so you do not have a large inventory that comes to you.

It makes no sense to want to sell off everything during the campaign and set a goal of say, $10,000 if you know that it will be a struggle to hit it.

Thanks for the interest and support with the deck. I hope that I've answered most of your queries and that you'll help make this campaign a successful one!

If you have any further questions, I'll be coming back to check this post, so shoot away!

60% and 13 days to go. I sure do hope that these get funded as I know Kenneth put a lot of hard work into these.
