custom cards
hey guys. ive loved playing cards since i was a kid. so much that in the recent years, i started customizing my own (suits, courts, themes, etc.). i have a lot of ideas but my prototypes are just silly clip art. my problem is that im not much of an artist, so all of my stuff is simply rough drafts. i dont know anyone in graphic design either to help me with them. what do you think i should do in order to take my deck to the next level? thanks in advance

Re: custom cards
We'd love to see your work - nothing wrong with rough if the ideas are creative!
There are many artists who visit often and I'm sure you'll get plenty of tips about art packages and techniques.
You may even find an artist willing to take up your ideas and help you realise them.
Good luck

Re: custom cards
Those are standard courts. You mentioned you were doing custom courts. I know you're not an artist but maybe you could describe to us better what direction you're planning on taking (i.e. theme).

Re: custom cards
well this is one of the themes. in this deck i planned on making each suit a different color, changing the names of the courts, and added the Valet back in to make it a 58 card deck. some of my other themes include Patriotic, Egyptian, and Native American decks

Re: custom cards
As Tom says, he's a mamber here who also liked the idea of extended courts. He added a Bishop and Cavellier as well as suited Jokers.

Re: custom cards
Malcolm K - Dr. Sprouts speaking. First of all, I'm that weird guy. I have even thought of a 3rd deck which would be 9 suits with 16 cards each for a total of 144 cards in a deck. This deck would be the new Tarot card deck to replace the Rider-Waite deck http://www.albideuter.de/html/waite.html. Now if you added 2 decks more decks for total of 432 cards this would be the new casino game to replace "BlackJack" I call the game "Gold King" What better name for a game then the highest card of the deck. Oh, you thought the Ace was the highest card. No, the Ace is has a value of "1" The 9 suits would be in an alignment. Hearts would be Lawful good, Diamonds would be Chaotic Good , Spades would be Lawful Evil , and Clubs would be Chaotic Evil. The other suits would be Staffs, Leafs, Coins, Cups, and Swords. If you notice, the suits pair up, i.e. Hearts-Dimonds, Spades-Clubs, but which one is the Trump suit which is True Neutral. This chart should put things in perspective. I'm even working on a 4th deck. I wish to bring back the 7 deadly sins and the 7 Cardinal virtues. After looking at your images, it looks like you have 4 court cards in your deck and 2 Jokers for a total of 58 cards. Is that right? I would like to see more court cards....

Re: custom cards
sorry i dont know how to upload multiple attachments if thats possible. the Valet i already showed you and then the Jack of Clubs.....
for my other deck, the names are Lord (King), Dame (Queen), Valet, and Knave (Jack). ive always liked the KNAVE name better but didnt want two K's so i had to change all the courts.

Hey Malcom, I honestly dont see a "theme", all i see is standard french courts with sub-par fonts and pips. What ties everything together ?

Re: custom cards
hey volant, those were for Sprouts because he wanted to see some of the court cards. remember these are just a rough draft. im trying to find a designer to make them "official". um, now that i think about it, i guess there really is no theme per se. just a version of the existing playing cards that i wanted to make. i do have some themed ones in mind but no these arent them. thanks again for the feedback

Re: custom cards
Hi Malcom
There has been a lot of decks using these courts recently, albiet without the Extra Valet cards.
To rise above these decks a Theme is very important.
Here`s an example of a theme for French courts.
When i think French . i think the battle of Waterloo. Each side of the conflict can have a colour. For example Reds(Diamonds & Hearts) = Duke of Wellington & General Blucher . Blacks(Spades & Clubs) = Napoleon & General Ney . with the many generals on each side there would be no problems filling your Knaves and valet cards. The card backs could have the flags of each country involved and maybe some muskets and drums of the period etc
This above example is along the same vein as the Independence decks from Jackson.
As for looking for a Artist to help you with your deck, deviantart.com Has some great artists that do commissions
or maybe any local arts and crafts group near you can help.
i look forward to see what you can come up with .

Thanks Jase for the info. Ill look into it. As for this deck, like I said this one doesnt really have a theme per se. It was just an idea I had on the cards today. Look at my Santa one tho for a Christmas theme deck

@volantangel - You right. I don't see a theme. I see old style courts with a different color for the suits. Not that special...volantangel wrote:Hey Malcom, I honestly dont see a "theme", all i see is standard french courts with sub-par fonts and pips. What ties everything together ?
@Malcolm K - You might want to think of a theme for your cards. It makes a difference believe me or you might lose your party.
