thanks for the wealth of knowledge! very interesting, ive never really messed with hoyle brand cards before, at least not since i got into cardistry. though im very interested on finding out the differences in each of the studs...kind of wished they werent used but hey, you get what you pay for lolandrew daugherty wrote:STUDS ANSWER: That jumbo index, blue Stud deck is from the late 80s, when Walgreens contracted with Hoyle to make its store brand cards. Hoyle produced a similar, but different back to its version of the Studs. The company reverted to USPC after 1990.
Note the Hoyle pips, especially on the joker. Hoyle Studs should have a blank bottom on the box and a white and black "Stud" seal on the top of the box. These were sold wrapped in plastic, attached to cardboard hangers. Occasionally they were also sold in two-packs, stacked atop one another on the cardboard.
Hoyle Studs are hard to find. They were made in bright red and blue in standard/poker size, jumbo index and pinochle varieties.
Card stock should be comparable to what was used for Hoyle shellbacks back then.
Now you know.
Happy hunting.
Andrew
I ran across this nonsense a few posts ago. The forum software replaces the word m-e-h (without the hyphens) with the "I take umbrage...appropriately" sentence.Fluffykitten wrote:overall my reaction is "I take umbrage at your previous assertion but cannot be arsed to respond appropriately."
you are right it doesnt make sense. but i will leave it be as it is kind of funny.RSLancastr wrote:I ran across this nonsense a few posts ago. I assume this might be appropriate if an entire post consists of only that one word, but in this instance (and the one that happened to me), the word is a reaction to a deck of cards, and the replacement makes no sense.
I have that deck, and had forgotten that it was a Piatnik deck:samurai007 wrote:One Piatnik set that I'd like to add to my collection is the Italian Cats, but I can't seem to find a set.:

The Jack Daniel's Gentleman's Playing Cards were a steal. Both decks are sealed and it has a cool, tin case.
The Winston Cigarette Playing Cards are sealed as well, and are in pristine condition.
The Kent Playing Cards were cheap, so I picked them up.
More decks in the next post...
I believe that tax stamps were stopped being put on card decks in 1965.darkinertia wrote:also, when theres a tax stamp, typically how old does that make it at minimum? i myself never seen tax stamps before,im really not too sure why they have them or why they gotten rid of them either
i bought it in the Hong Kong airport for 48 HK.. it must be cheaper if you get it from out side the airport..walrus wrote:Intersting on the Bees. I have family here in the US from China right now. They want to bring a few Bee decks back. Bees are valued on the mainland going for up to thirty yen a deck (around four bucks) which is a lot for many Chinese. May I ask what you paid for them. Perhaps they are less yen in Hong Kong (perhaps more.)
I got my floral in as well... is there a reason the 2's in one of the corners is backwards for all suits? Was that on purpose?Evan wrote:I received my Floral decks, and my Luxury Crown decks today.
Sounds like another "Piraue"-incident to meMJF wrote: I got my floral in as well... is there a reason the 2's in one of the corners is backwards for all suits? Was that on purpose?
They did that on purpose??? Hmmmm. Okay, I guess... this deck gets weirder and weirder...RSLancastr wrote:Nice catch on the backward 2's MJF!
As to the "off-center" backs, I think that the left edge is for cardists, the right edge for everyone else.
I think Bob was just joking. Surely nobody would do that on purpose...MJF wrote:They did that on purpose??? Hmmmm. Okay, I guess... this deck gets weirder and weirder...RSLancastr wrote:Nice catch on the backward 2's MJF!

You don't think that would be a valid marketing strategy?MagikFingerz wrote:I think Bob was just joking. Surely nobody would do that on purpose...
Hahahahahahaha... NO!RSLancastr wrote:You don't think that would be a valid marketing strategy?MagikFingerz wrote:I think Bob was just joking. Surely nobody would do that on purpose...
Hello MJFMJF wrote:Here's what I'm referring to...
Also the cards all seem to be off center...
and folks don't attempt to feed me that line "it's well within USPCC's tolerances"... that's baloney... if this is acceptable to them, they have MUCH ROOM for improvement... if the major sports card companies can get it right, there's no excuse for USPCC... sure, this quality might be good enough for their every day $2.95 decks, but not $10+ decks.
Other than that... this is a very good looking deck.
IIRC, there's a Black one, a Gold one and a Blue one.PlayingCardz wrote:CLICK TO VIEW LISTING
Finally found the blue one![]()
The box is in terrible condition though, but all the cards are there
