Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
Hi,
someone is searching for these Bicycles but doesn’t have the tuck case anymore. Does one in here know what deck this is?

Re: Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
Found to interesting card backs. If anyone knows something about them all info is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Clues so far:
- Bridge size
- Faces seem to be standard
- Silver back has scandal written on it and the gold one has The Eavesdropper on it.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
These look very similar to a set of De La Rue from the 20's That i have.
Do you have any images of the spade courts so i could identify them ?

Unfortunately not. The single I have is a five of diamonds. It looks standard. De la Rue is a good clue, thank you. I'll try to find a catalogue of their decks.

Doing a google search for the image I got to this page that indicates it really is from De La Rue:

Ah, got you. Yah, that's the card Jock mentioned that is from De la Rue. The both above was what I was looking for. But I have found this - https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/ ... -427444536 - so, they are confimred De la Rue as well. Not too much info an them tho. I gotta find a site or something that focuses on De la Rue stuff

Re: Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
I took a look a the link you shown, quite an entertaining read
I really would not get too excited by the "rare" and "Hard to find" bits if i was you.
Given time i could probably get one of these packs for between £5-£10 and if it was tax sealed maybe £15-£20
and that's if i really wanted the pack (which i don't)
I don`t usually buy a lot of De La Rue, the last set i bought was a "Lion & Unicorn" double from 1958 which has full custom courts and that set only cost me £15.50 inc postage.
My point being there is not a lot of De La Rue decks from 1900 onwards that are sought after and worth paying good money for.....
But that is only my opinion and i am far from being an expert.

Re: Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
Thanks for your insights. I figured the same but am even further away from being an expert regarding vintage/antique stuff than you. But given that folks are constantly overpaying big time for stuff, I'm always sceptic by default and take everything with a grain of salt if somebody tells me rare and hard to find. - Especially when the mentioned source for the evaluation is a tv show

Let me ask about this deck I just picked up on ebay. It says it is from the 30s and gilded. It is not in great shape, but I like the art on the backs and the double case that came with the set.

Re: Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
Hi Brad, just seen this so sorry for late reply.
there are a few companies that have an "Regal" range...but this one judging by the back design looks like it could be a pack from the Arrow playing card company (which later became Arrco )... please Remember i am not an expert and i could be wrong
The deck looks bridge size, so that could confirm the 1930's date as this was around about the time of the American "Bridge Era" of the early 1920`s - late 1930`s
It would be a lot easier to identify decks if the Ace of Spades is shown.
I assume your Ace is anonymous or you wouldnt need it identified, so does it look like this?

I don’t have the deck yet. I’ll post the Ace of Spades when I get the deck.

Re: Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
I received the decks yesterday, so below are some photos, including the AoS. Any help in identification would be helpful. The deck and case is nice, but definitely a fair bit of wear.
Based on the AoS, it is manufactured by The Gibson Playing Card Company, which started playing card production in the 1930's and it's playing card production was fairly short lived. Here was all I was able to find out. Nothing about Minerva though. https://www.wopc.co.uk/usa/gibson I have no idea on value and rarity.

Re: Summoning the hive mind for deck identification!
Very Cool Brad . The Ace makes all the difference when looking for info.
Hochman Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards by Tom & Judy Dawson has pretty much the same thing to say about the company as the wopc link you shared
"The Gibson playing Card Co, Cincinnati and New York produced cards starting arond 1930. This smaller company produced a great many brands during the early contract bridge era. The Gibson PCC was part of the Gibson Greeting Card Co., Cincinnati.
Eventually, one of the USPC`s executives left to join the Gibson Company. USPC subsequently bought the Gibson Company, Kept the executive and the playing card side of the business and sold the greeting card side back to the original owners"
Here`s a link to the Gibson page at the World Wide Playing Card Museum Site ,

Hellos and welcome to UC. Wouldn't happen to have a snap of the card back and other joker would you? When these fellas pull out the ole detective hat the more visual information they have the better.
TL:DR It's completely up to you.
