Gorilla Deck

Hello,
I'm the artist that created the cards for the Edgy Brothers Dia De Los Muertos decks. I have a new deck that I'm designing for an independent campaign in between Edgy Brothers campaigns, and I would love some input on the card designs. The basic concept is a traditional style deck with gorillas as the court cards. I wanted to have fun with this one.
I'd like to know if they need to be more colorful etc.
thanks,
Dave

Your good so far. You don't break any rules. Show the pips. I'll say it though. On the back of your card is that a sword between the apes legs or is that a big..... have fun I see the pun with eating the leaf....

Dude. He's on a bike.

Can't wait to see the rest of the cards!

I like those, though I'm curious: any particular reason why it's limited to gorillas and not open to the other great apes?

I felt like limiting it to gorillas would keep the deck more "satirical" and less animal kingdom themed. Plus, I really like drawing gorillas:)

Yeah I like gorillas!

You could always do chimp/ oranutan /baboon editions later on lol

i'm biased, obviously, since dave is my brother and we do campaigns together. but this is a simple idea, skillfully executed and there isn't really anything i can find to criticize. you wanted to do a classic bicycle deck but with gorillas, and that's exactly what you've done. you need to retain as much of the classic deck design as possible to realize the theme, and while there are tons of other "gorilla" elements you could probably introduce into the design, you'd crowd out some of those classic design elements that make a bicycle deck, and by then you'd have lost your central idea. i do think the pips will be a challenge since you have to figure out how to "gorilla" those up.

Ah they're riding bikes!!!! had to really stare at it for a bit to get that.. maybe curve the handlebars a bit more to look more like a bike. at first blush i thought he was wearing a belt and sitting behind a sword.

Good input, I'll change the card back to look more like they are riding bikes.
Thanks!

I don't think it's the design as much as it is the color. Maybe making the bike whiter would help?

Love the training wheels, is it possible to put impressions on the tires?

I like monkeys. Thus, this is awesome. Also agree, bonus points for training wheels and showing subtle tread on the tires might be nice.

Only other comment right now is consider removing the frames on the court cards, especially if you don't have them on the number cards. You are spilling over the frame anyhow and I don't see it adding much since it's just a line. I find it a bit distracting as it cuts through the head, but the sides are fine. Maybe do a side by side of with and with out to see what it looks like. Or, make it a frame of tiny bananas or something to add more detail.

Who DOESN'T like monkeys? :ugdance:

I agree with both of the above, some detail on the wheel might make it easier to see that it's a bicycle. And un-framed courts usually look better than framed ones, removing the current line shouldn't be a problem.

daveEdgerly - Sounds like we need to see a side by side view of lines and no lines. I thought lines define it as a court card. The back looks better. It looks like a bike.   Your AoS looks nice. What does "Gorilla 189" mean?

Well if he's gorillafying rider backs, wouldn't it make sense to keep everything except certain elements the same as them? Like the court outline?

OK, sorry to be "that guy"... but Gorillas are NOT monkeys! They are Apes! :ugking:

On a more serious note... @ Dave: What is up with the Edgar Allan Poe Playing Cards?

Your update said that you guys received the cards May 7, but so far i haven't heard of anyone receiving their decks yet...

What gives?

I'll be a little more interested in your next deck when i get the first one i pledged for.
And for that matter, you still need to deliver on the Dia de los Muertos decks as well! :D

The numbers are significant in their symbolism. They mean new beginnings and good fortune. I can do a side by side of the court cards, but I will probably keep the frames.
I have put a call into the guys that I did the Poe deck with to try and find out what is taking so long. I know that the USPCC is backed up with orders and aren't very fast with their turnarounds to begin with. I hope that backers start getting their decks for Poe soon. My part of the deal was to be the artist on the project, and fulfilled my end of the deal months ago. I know that I am still responsible for you guys getting your decks, and I assure you that you will.
The cards designs for the Dia de los Muertos Decks were finished weeks ago and we are waiting final approval by the USPCC. That should happen this week. Once again we are waiting on the USPCC. All of the other add ons have been ordered. The cards will take probably 4 to 6 weeks to print. All of the fulfillment will be handled by my partners at Edgy Brothers. My end of the job has been fulfilled.
I'm working on this Gorilla Deck to stay sharp as an artist in between my next project with Edgy Brothers. I was approached by a group to do this new deck and really liked the idea. To that end, in between Edgy Brothers projects, I am always open to doing the art for other decks as long as I like the concept and can agree to terms with the project managers.
The Gorilla deck will be printed by EPCC. They have assured us that they can turnaround the decks in 30 days or less. They also provide embellishments such as embossing and foil at a much lower price than the USPCC and still print high quality decks.
I'm really sorry that the Poe Decks are taking so long to ship and as soon as I get some answers, I will pass them on to you guys. I'm not trying to pass on responsibility for fulfilling
your pledges, and I assure you that I will get some answers as to why. I wasn't aware that no one had received their decks for Poe and am alarmed to hear it. I'm sure that there is a good reason as to why and will let you know as soon as I do.

Just a quick update, I spoke to James from the Poe Deck campaign, and he told me that they are shipping out decks daily, and have been for some time. He said that the decks look great and to thank you for your patience. I'm sure that you should have your decks and add ons soon. Thanks for your patience and support.

Oh you! While you have a point, anybody that likes monkeys will also like chimps and apes. They all are fun!

I guess you don't know the "I Like Monkeys" joke (may offend somebody I'm sure) as that's where I was going with that specific wording. ;)

Can't wait to see more about this deck though.

Yup, these are awesome. Thanks. I really like the different face for each suit and something to spice up the number cards.

So when/where do I get to send you cash money so I can get some of these???
