POLARIS - a new deck design from Vända cards

Hey folks,
In my (very limited) spare time while running the Vända kickstarter project, I've been working on a new deck design that will be coming soon.
It's called 'Polaris' and will be a 2-deck set in 'Lunar' and 'Solar' editions. The primary inspiration behind the design for Polaris was to create a deck that looks amazing when fanned...the rest of the design has been falling into place from there.
More images to come...

I loved your typographical design for Vanda cards. I've pledged for both decks. I hope this new design has typo work in it again. I'm an admirer of fonts.

hehe, thanks montag!
Polaris is actually going to have graphical court cards so no cool typography in this deck

But I have plans for other typographic use in some other future designs...

If those are the backs, then they look super cool but I'd like to see black or white borders but very thin ones.

Borders ruin the fan design and I think these actually look way cooler without borders

GIANT FANs will look amazing with this back pattern.
Do you mind posting pictures of the court cards?

Can I get an "AMEN!" and a "Halleluja!"
These look fantastic, David. And the colors are... interesting to say the least. I can't really say I instantly like them, but I certainly don't dislike them and they are extraordinary (didn't I say something similar about the Vända deck?

). I do love the patterns though!

From the other hand USPCC’s inability to cut playing cards correctly can ruin visual symmetry of your back design.

Why doesn't the Solar aces have the same corner thingies like its back design, like the lunar ones do?

This is true, you need to ensure good quality control.

I was toying with a cleaner-looking design for the solar deck. I like the simpler look of it.

You might get feedback from magicians wanting them to be the same on the faces as the backs.
I like it though. And I've never understood that need some of them seem to have to be able to do reversed card effects with every deck they buy

Yeah, that's why I left the design in on the lunar deck - for reverse card effects - the solar deck is for the design-oriented folks who want a cleaner look

I honestly like the bordered version better. If they're thin borders, the fans will still look awesome!

There's enough bordered decks on the market. We need some borderless ones

I agree fingerofmagic, it is not that one can not do reverse card effects without borders it just means one must be very percise. Most of us who are into magic have 37,000 decks anyway.

okay...working on the Polaris designs and need some opinions...
trying to decide whether to go with a border or borderless background for the face cards. do you like the group on the left or the right?

I much prefer the borderless background... it's cleaner, crisper and aesthetically more pleasing.
For my professional design consultation, I require one deck upon eventual completion.
j/k, can you blame me for trying?
Seriously though, I prefer the borderless.

They both look awesome, but I'm leaning more towards the borderless one for the same reasons as MJF.
If you made both though, I'd buy both

I like the right WAY better. Still not convinced on the back design

I prefer clearly the withe face card. Blue are too dark.

I'm now putting together the details for the kickstarter project for Polaris and wanted to share some of the new images and info...
I've decided to keep the backer levels very simple and straightforward - I hope this will make everything easier for backers to order exactly what they want and for me to keep track of who purchased what items. They will basically be a base level and everything (additional decks + accessories) can be added on a la carte.
I'm creating card-sized limited edition laser-etched wooden cards - each backer gets one. They will have laser-etched serial numbers and you can choose any card from the deck to be etched on the front.
I'm working on putting the video together and plan to launch on kickstarter in the next week or two - I'll keep you updated on the actual launch date/time once I get the finalized.

I've also designed a set of poker chips to go with the Polaris design - I found a company that produces high-quality chips that look and feel fantastic (casino-quality) and these are gonna be really sweet!

Haha, I hope so! I'm super excited about the Polaris decks - these are going to be excellent decks for playing any card games. Can't wait to get some poker chips for myself, too

This deck looks awesome! I'm really liking the design... it's very unique.
I still think it needs thin, white borders, though
