Surrealist Playing Cards by Salvador Dalí

Unread post by Räpylätassu »

This is not a new deck but I thought that this deck deserves its own thread:

This deck is called Surrealist Playing Cards, printed by Draeger Freres in Paris originally in 1967 and then again in 1969, designed by Salvador Dalí. Right now you must be thinking, so it's a Salvador Dalí themed deck, not actually designed by... NO! This deck is actually designed by Salvador Dalí and features his original artwork designed specifically for this deck. They are sold in doubles, featuring red and blue decks. The decks also come with gilded edges. The gilding on the edges is actually 24 carat gold!

Image

I personally don't have this deck but I know for a fact that Amy owns a pair of these. As Betty Boop says in the movie "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?": What a lucky girl...

AND HERE IS A LISTING FOR AN UNOPENED 1969 PAIR IN A WOODEN BOX for 335 USD or make an offer. The seller ships from Spain. The price is rather high but then again, it's a price for a two deck set. And it is an actual Salvador Dalí designed piece so it's a nice deck to show to your friend, relatives etc just to flex and create admiration, conversation and envy.

(There is also a pair of unopened 1967 original on ebay... for 899,99 USD......)

These look as amazing as you'd expect. Doesn't surprise me that he designed a deck, he also designed the Chupa Chups logo and did a few other commercial projects.

I'd certainly like to have a set. Maybe someday.

I'd say keep checking this listing in case this fails to sell quickly and when you get a payday, you strike at it :)

OK this is officially my "when I win the lottery" deck. I don't think it'll knock off my White Whale (Icons Signature, for those playing along at home) but my wishlist definitely just got a little longer.

Now why can't they remake stuff like this on KS instead of JNuggs??

+ 1,000,000

Even if copyright permissions would need to be obtained, they did it for JN....Yeah, I have no words. This is another great example of truly spectacular playing card design. If I had a white whale list, this would be on it.

You got some cool decks man... I think that the 335 USD asking price was rather fair so you got a good deal for sure! Plus it really is a fantastic piece to show off to friends, family etc.

Are you going to open or keep them sealed? :D If you decide to open, please post pictures of the pip cards :D

I have the second edition boxed set. I got lucky a few years ago and picked up the set, which has unopened cards. It’s beautiful. I actually prefer the second edition to the first edition due to the box and picture with wax seal. It doesn’t look 50 years old !

1969 Edition both decks opened, in tuck boxes for 275 USD or make an offer. Shipping from Spain.

Tuck boxes show a little age, cards not in cellophane but other than that, as good as new.

This same seller has for some reason two listings for these decks. What makes it interesting is that the other listing is for 215 € for the pair! That's about 30 € less than the other one! Also the shipping is cheaper on this one!

This is a good deal.

Two interesting listings currently for this deck on ebay.

Firstly, THIS ONE. Both decks, blue deck opened but in like new condition, red deck in cellophane. The leather box is in great condition. Current bid at 102,50 USD with 3 days and 19 hours left, 2 bidders. The price should rise a bit on this one but I say with the current condition and the the fact that the red deck is also sealed, it's worth at least way over 200 USD. Shipping from Connecticut.

Also, THIS ONE. Same decks, these both out of cellophane but both in new like condition. The leather box has some minor wear to it. Asking price is 200 USD or make an offer. Shipping from Florida. I think that this one is worth less than the first listing but I don't think that it would be a bad idea to send the seller an offer for something like 140 USD, which would be a wicked deal. That 200 USD asking price is not that horrible either IMO, but I would try first if you can get it for a bit less.

Regrettably the set I bought has never arrived which is disappointing. It shipped in the middle of August and the tracking never updated after 2 days. The seller wants me to wait a couple of more weeks.

Let's also hope that you get the one you bought from Spain. The same seller did deliver the decks to skooks88 so I would assume it's the Spanish mail that has messed up and not the seller.

Slightly OT, but the Spanish postal service is utter garbage. I've bought 2 sets of decks from Spanish sellers. The first was a KS campaign that never arrived (pair of limited edition decks #/20 -- thankfully it was replaced immediately by the seller. Decks now #/40, but I've got them).

The second was sent by Spanish FedEx, who couldn't deliver because they can't access PO Boxes in my country. No consignment nor tracking number sent. They call me 4.40 on a Friday afternoon, by the time I find the right person to talk to it's 4.55pm. 'Call back Monday'. Call back as soon as I can Monday morning, speaking to a different person 'Oh sorry, that package has been returned to Frankfurt, you'll have to call the sender'

Finally get on to the sender, who tells me the delivery's been destroyed because of quarantine laws, 'but we're happy to send you another via regular post. We're not at fault here, you'll have to pay shipping' .... $70 and 4 weeks later I get the cards I ordered.

damn son, I was watchin' this one too! it was a great deal and I'm bummed to have missed out but you're lucky that I'm so so soooo beyond broke atm cuz it really is an awesome set and you got it for a great price - lucky bastard lol ;) :P

Seriously tho, the color and illustrations on the cards are fantastic and I'm happy to see a UC friend get it :ucstar: :ucstar: :ucstar: :ucstar: :ucstar:

As Roope mentioned in the OP, I do have the '69, 2nd edition wooden box set and, being such a big fan of Dalí and surrealism in general, it's one of my personal favorites of my entire collection and probably comes out the most to be shown to others since he's such a renowned artist. Congrats on the new addition to your collection and def be sure to enjoy the cards <3

OOF! that's awful! I'm so sorry to hear!

Your shipping stories - or rather, nightmares - always makes me more grateful for the very few and rare headaches i've had to deal with in regards to intl. shippinng... I DO NOT envy you despite living somewhere so beautiful lol :|

Yeah, I've been pretty wary of Spanish KS campaigns since. USPS, Royal Mail, Deutsche Post, Greek Post and Italian Post have been no trouble getting to my PO box (btw, I gotta go pick up a Lotrek in a couple of days). Even the Latvian and Ukrainian Posts had no trouble finding me.

Good to know about Spanish post. USPS is horrible, Royal mail has lost a few packages. So far Greek post (but it's registered so it makes a difference) and Ukranian post has never not arrived safely to Malaysia. One of the best things about NPCC fulfillment, so far I've never had 1 package lost yet.

I wish KS or the backer surveys will give us inti'l backers an option to pay more for registered mail. Ah well...

I received the set a couple of days ago. The pictures on Ebay made this set look very good. To be honest, having it in hand it actually looks better. It is absolutely beautiful looking, near perfect. The gold gilding is amazing. Probably my favorite deck in my collection right now, very happy with the price paid for it.

I will post a couple of photos soon.

I did receive the other decks and I will compare the two.
