I am late to this party but I also prefer the original design. Not sure what changed but I will wait to see the KS launch to decide what I want to do.

One of the things I most enjoyed about Jackson's original Sherlock Holmes KS project was that several different styles were employed for the different decks. I'm cautiously optimistic that we will eventually see different styles for this series, as well.

Yes he has already said that at least one of the decks will combine the line art style previously contemplated along with the newer style (I posted an image earlier in the thread around it). His rationale for abandoning the line art style was that the detail wouldn't really show when printed.

Dang! I wonder if the Tolkien estate told him they'd be licensing the story to multiple parties

I would be quite upset if I was KWP and was not aware of this.

I am in no wonder, what makes everyone around starts to talk about Lord of the Rings? XD
Is there an upcoming movies that adds up to the series? Remakes? Side Stories adaptations? Anniversary of the series?

There is the upcoming LotR series from Amazon.

Theory11 will probably be doing the movie license, while KW is doing the book versions.

Jackson has done a fantastic job distinguishing his book adaptations from movie adaptations in the past so I would assume this time will be no different. Despite being the exact same theme, I'm sure both decks (T11's & KWP's) will be very different from each other.

From the T11 instagram post, the bit of tuck they are showing looks very good, which is tpyical of their decks. Looking forward to this one too. It will be interesting to see what they do.

Some LOTR fans will get both decks, but some will surely go with one or the other based on preference and price point. The timing on this is rather unfortunate, especially since T11 will likely release their deck just ahead of Jackson's Kickstarter.

I think this can only help. To be honest. One will bring attention to the other. I think a bunch of collectors will discover KWP through comparing the two decks. They are sufficiently different that any fan of LOTR will say “I only have room for one LOTR deck”.
On a personal note, Kevin Cantrell’s involvement in this LOTR T11 release is something that I believe will also help my next project, The Successor (also designed by KCS). I don’t think two KCS decks will discourage the purchase of one or another.

I think it will be interesting to see two different approaches so close together. T11 will draw a LOT of interest with their price point and it's guaranteed the tuck and design will be awesome because it's T11 and Kevin Cantrell.
KWP will have the opportunity to enhance the experience with potential add-ons and a completely different custom approach to the design. It will be a higher price point, but I think there will be some very special options that will have people doing both. I am likely going to be in that camp.

I think the decision process between two LotR-themed decks is quite a bit different than two Kevin Cantrell decks. I can see people deciding, I will only support one of the LotR sets but I can't see people saying I will not support The Successor because Kevin Cantrell was involved in the T11 LotR decks. I could be wrong though. I plan on backing all three!

I guess that depends on your perspective. If you're looking to sell decks, having a competitor release a similar product just before yours which will almost certainly siphon some of your market share doesn't seem very helpful. T11 fans aren't likely to forego a ~$10 LOTR deck because of the KWP project; the reverse seems much more plausible. As I said, some people will get both, but others will surely take the first, less expensive option and be satisfied with that.

We know that JR's decks will be more expensive than T11's. That said, while art is a matter of taste, I certainly find JR's approach to the book-themed decks he's doing to be far superior to KC's work. Yes, your mileage may vary.
So, I'm totally happy to pay JR prices for JR's LoTR decks (assuming they don't go up substantially from where his prices currently trend.)
I would *not* be similarly inclined to spend JR prices on the KC LoTR decks -- whether there were a JR competing deck or not. But, to pay T11 prices for the KC decks? Yeah, I'll pick up the KC decks in addition to JR's decks.

Things I can confirm.
The T11 deck is indeed a movie licensed product. With likenesses of characters that needed approval by the studio.
The deck is Designed by Kevin Cantrell.
It’s been a project long in the making.
Then Kevin will do excellent job on this T11 LotR deck!!!
I try to get both LotR T11 and the KWP LotR
Even majority would vote KWP is going to win (for Jackson’s experience in designing story decks), both will stay true to the story
I better start binge watching LotR and Hobbit

In my naive opinion, it doesn't have anything to do with win or lose. I know this sounds like a stupid statement but it seems like apples and oranges to me since we know these decks will be so different. Not only do the 2 artists have different styles but the book and movie adaptations are so different as well. And I definitely think there's room for both in my collection! I also don't think timing has anything to do with it. But again, I could just be naive.

Think about how many decks there have been on same themes. Day of the Dead, Cthulhu, Astrology, etc etc. I buy decks based on what appeals to me and value for money. I will likely get both, unless the T11 courts are not great. I already like what KWP is doing.

If anyone has any doubts that Jackson isn't bringing his "A" game to this effort, please see above. I was really excited when Jackson decided to use both versions he designed. He pulled out his nukes for this one.
I still want that map Jackson!
