dazzleguts wrote:Thanks for the info on the Alf Cooke decks Jase. :) I couldn't find the Canasta set at all but I may try logging in on ebay.uk, instead of .ca, to see more.

Interesting that the Boudoir came in a plastic box with a paper sleeve. That's a format used by the Nintendo and Angel playing card companies in Japan, but I don't remember seeing any decks packaged that way otherwise.
The problem with looking on ebay.uk is that a lot of the time the only shipping is quoted to British destinations, or at least that's what I have observed in the past.

Jace - is that "Torpedo" branded deck British, I'm assuming? I've got one in mint condition but I've never known how to attribute it. It came with a "Mohawk" (also mint) deck in a collection or lot as you would say, and I never really bothered to chase it down. Nice Steamboat! I've got a mint/unopened one that looks about the same with a 'sister' deck that has a 1954 date code on the AoS.

Torpedo, Mohawk, Caravan - they're all lesser-known bargain brands created by USPC. At one time, whatever leftover, inexpensive and unsold deck was lying around could end up in one of those boxes, but these days, it's usually Aviator playing cards, as you can see from the Jokers and Ace of Spades.

I think Aviators get used as often as they do in these boxes because USPC now designates them as a "regional brand", much like Maverick and Tally Ho. The only full-blown "national brands" left there are Bicycles and Bees. Mavericks are mostly found through the South except for Florida, though the national discount chain Family Dollar started stocking them in all of their stores in a custom-printed box listing the price as $1. Tally Ho can only be found (outside of a magic shop) in the city of New York. Lastly, Aviator is rarely sold outside of an airport these days, except perhaps from card dealers and magic shops.

I'm guessing that they occasionally have print overruns on Aviators and use these brand boxes for them, or they're intentionally printed and sold in these boxes as a deck with a price below Bicycle and a quality level above Maverick or Chinese-made Streamlines.

The vortex actually came with a lot of other cards from a collector selling some stock he has to fund a respray of his car.i know what you mean about the courts,it looks like designer was smoking whatever the king of diamonds is smoking the day he drew them
Haha I truly think that a 5 year old can draw better courts, i was utterly horrified when i opened the deck :D Loving the collection, wish i lived in a place with a stronger playing card history.

Really great job, Jace! You've inspired me to dig out some more of my vintage/antique Waddington, De la Rue and other British decks, and I have a few "on the way", so I'll post them in the "Look What I Added..." thread. Good stuff... I haven't seen my MPC decks yet, so I'm really surprised to see that they've already showed up on the other side of "the big pond". hmmm... Time to make a few phone calls, I should have mine by now, I'm thinking.

Those MPC really look like knockoff bees. Nice use of the bike decks ! May I borrow that idea ? I should have a gaff deck lying around somewhere !
