Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Well, with the tile bug well taken hold, I picked up a modern mahjong set (for family play) and this old hand carved poker set - I found myself I’ll equipped to pass on it:
Will post more pics elsewhere once it arrives

Crude yet so beautiful. The hanafuda tiles are also lovely. Just where are you going to be displaying these tiles if at all?

They will find display in the living room - most likely they will have me build them a display case

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
The black tray that I have them sitting on arrived with the tile sets - seems that the one I ordered from the factory comes with a tray for their auto dealing tables. Had I known I would have had zenmarket pull it from the shipment as it upped the box size considerably and accounted for quite the big shipping bill - I think they will be selling sets in the future without the tray though.
Comparison of the three sizes:
The vintage set (nice feel in the hand, not sure but imagine machine made entirely):
The modern set (machine engraved, hand painted):

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Moekaruta (Moekaruta) Rumoi's original Hanafuda
From Oishi Tengudo blog:
https://www.tengudo.jp/blog/karuta-news/4312.html
These are available for purchase now - about $24 each
https://okatteya-moe.shop-pro.jp/?pid=172159385
(I used zenmarket.jp to purchase, already having other items building up in the shipping warehouse there - 1 seemed too few, 3 seemed too many, so I got 3)
High quality, perfectly warped goodness…
Excerpt from blog:
Such a wonderful relationship with Hokkaido has come in.
We manufactured original hanafuda in Rumoi, Hokkaido (Romoikannai) at our shop (pachipachi).
Rumoi jurisdiction is a general term composed of municipalities lined up on the "Ororon Line" along the sea road from Otaru City to Wakkanai City, the northernmost city on the left side of Hokkaido.
■Teshio-cho (the origin of the name is from the Ainu word "Tes" (the "Yana" of the fish caught)
■Enbetsu-cho (Enbetsucho / the origin of the name is changed from the Ainu word "Wiepetsu" (the river talking about each other))
■Hatsuyamabetsu Village (Shosanbetsumura / the origin of the name is from the Ainu language "Soe Sanpetsu" (the river where the waterfall flows out))
■Haboro Town (Haborocho / the origin of the name is an accent from the Ainu word "Hapolopetsu" (a vast river that flows) + two islands of Teuri Island and Yagishiri Island.
■Tomamamae-cho (Toma Echo / the origin of the name is from the Ainu language "Tomao Mai" (a place where Ezo Engosaku is located))
■Kodaira-cho (Obiracho / the origin of the name is from the Ainu word "Opirau Shippetsu" (a place with a cliff in Kawaguchi))
■Rumoi City (Rumoishi / the origin of the name is from the Ainu language "Lurumope" (quiet river))
■Mashike-cho (the origin of the name is from the Ainu word "Mashkini" and "mashke" (a place with many seagulls))
(※Excerpt from Rumoi Promotion Bureau HP)
Each city has its own characteristics, highlights, and individuality, and you can enjoy wonderful scenic spots and outdoor spots for driving and touring, and rich food that can only be tasted here.
Hanafuda is also available at roadside stations and online shops on the Ororon Line that you can know while playing in Rumoi.

West Virginia Hanafuda
Came across this on Etsy and passed it over once or twice, not sure if they dropped the price or if it grew on me, but last time it strolled past I grabbed it - in the post now

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
The West Virginia is very nice. Love how they've redone the tiles to match WV scenery. The traffic cone tiles are a nice touch, with the umbrella man being changed to a raincoat football fan being the best.

Fresh from Japan - a few more added to the unboxing backlog…
Monster Hunter Hanafuda, Nichijou Hanafuda and a new one from Oishi Tengudo (3 of those) - picked up another snoopy deck and a second summer wars hanafuda, both having popped up at beg to buy me prices.

How did you get the Snoopy Museum deck? I can't anything less than $50 on ebay and that's not counting shipping.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
I look for them from time to time - and had figured at one point that perhaps I should be looking in Japan and how easy that would be, but came up empty - eventually one turned up in Yahoo Auctions Japan for $30 - just luck

Kuroko's Basketball Hanafuda
Spotted this one a ways back but had to prowl for a while until I found a good deal in Japan - now that I jumped on it I have a lone item at the warehouse needing companions for shipping over the next few weeks

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Well a real pleasant surprise arrived today - Hanafuda Yokai - an Etsy find - 4 left at the moment, $40 plus shipping (from Spain) makes them pricey, but I’m glad I sprung (quality is decent, with off center cuts like USPCC the rule)
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1389537105 ... rds-silver
Later this week the lighting arrives for taking some decent pics, but here is a preview of these mirror backed beauties…

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
And this is why you always want to buy your hanafuda from Japan - the price difference shown here is pretty standard between zenmarket and ebay for hanafuda
There is only one set being sold here, listed in japan once and on ebay 4 times - its a used set and all have same pics with same damage, all from different sellers
I would pick up the set at this price, but as it has some damage (very minor) I am passing unless it gets super cheap as I already have a mint set - been watching it for a while and the price is already way down from where they started (around 300)
Note - It will still cost you 30 or more to ship it from japan, best absorbed by getting a few other items and having them shipped together by zen

Is there a specific name for this deck? I get multiple results just searching for Hwatu.

Re: All aboard the Hanafuda Railroad
Not sure, MiNatu I think, but here are the labels:
(Note that it was listed as “Unused Korea Hanafuda” so the only way to have found it was to look at all hanafuda listings (searching for hanafuda in Japanese). Actual listing title in Japanese was “未使用 韓国 花札”
And as much of the back label as I could translate:
1. Product name:Minadu/2Owon:Korea/3Target age
19 years old and over/4. Use:Picture-playing equipment/5Manufacturer: Tote Design (02-839-4643)/6Our folk painting is applied to Jaihan Tot's self-authorized work.

One Piece Hanafuda
Nicer quality than I had suspected - PVC not cardboard, with a decent warp to them
Managed to get a blurry pic or three, will retake shortly

Start of shooting this deck was going just ducky, but the card shots had too much glare and will retaken - so, just a glimpse…
