Re: ACTIVE playing cards
I really like transformation decks and this one is turning out great so far...I agree with ecNate about the 4OC looking forced as well as the 4OS looking too cluttered with the puppeteers and string...I think my favorite so far is the 2OS or the 7OS. Great stuff and look forward to seeing more cards.
A deck a day helps keep the addiction at bay!

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
Thanks guys! I really appreciate your comments. I agree that some of them are a bit forced - I'm going to go back over all of them once I've done a first draft to try and rework those iffy bits.
Prism: Night is taking a lot of my time, trying to get that campaign over the line (please check it out!), but in the meantime here is the first edition of the card back - 2 way, thin borders, interesting, and gloriously Pipmen
Let me know what you think, I love comments and suggestions (of all varieties)

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
It's not bad, but I know you can do better. I would rather see a more intricate standard back design that features a number of pipmen within it, peeking around design elements, integrated into it, etc. It would likely mean they would be quite small, but that would be part of the fun. It looks like a standard fancy mirrored back from a distance, but on closer in inspection...there's a pipman, and another, oh and look what that ones doing! This is a bit too in your face and simple. Take it up a notch.

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
I hear you loud and clear Nate! I'll keep that old back around as possibly a 55th gaff card, but how about this for the back?
It's a pipmen interpretation of the classic Bicycle Riders back:
I think that it's still a bit unbalanced, and I might swap the lady with the big umbrella in the middle circles out for someone less intrusive on the design. Also, looking at it now there are some parts that are a bit blurred, and some quite sharp. I'll have to fix them so they are uniform.
What do you think?
(NOTE: I fixed up a few things on the back to make it more balanced and replaced the picture from the original post)

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
You are correct about being unbalanced, mostly because the king and queen in corners. The purists will say it needs to be mirrored top/bottom and left/right. While that is ideal it does limit you so if it's close left/right and at least is top/bottom it can work.
I also think the 2 center circles might better with a single large pitman like the original, with smaller ones in the background. Try moving king and queen to be in circles as top bottom in each and use others for corners to start. Or side by side in them if you only focus on top/bottom symmetry. Just lightening up the king might help too by adding white details to robe.
You are on the right path though, just minor tweaks needed.

Quick opinion - Corner decoration or no on the courts? Something else all together?

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
Definitely not. Courts on transformation decks are always a bit of a disappointment naturally due to lack of pips to play with. Since you are using shadow profile look, these portrait styles are a bit dull.
I wonder if there is another way to liven them up. Have you tried adding correct and details to this image? More of a full scene sounds interesting, but would be a challenge to keep court look and mirror.

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
I agree - no detail it is.
I was experimenting with ways to make them more interesting. They are difficult to keep interesting and in theme with the rest of the deck, but I have some ideas. I don't want to have good numbers and boring courts - leave it with me

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
Just stopping in here again to say I REALLY want these to happen. I understand why you and others would want to wait until Prism is fulfilled, but man I hope we don't have to wait until Nov/Dec to have this go live or even see more about this deck. If you are waiting, please post updates on new designs, planned project details, etc.
Love this one. That's all, carry on.

I definitely haven't stopped working on these! I am going to be sitting on a release until after Prism: Night has been fulfilled, so I'm looking at launching this early in the new year (holidays over Christmas prevents it in December). I'm so glad you are excited for them - there is a lot of work that goes into each one, so it's good to know you're still keen
Also sorry to turn the drip feed off for a while. Almost all the designs have finished the 1st or 2nd draft - there are a few still to be decided on theme, several which need to go through proper detailing, not to mention a couple of surprises for the campaign I've also got to keep track of what I show so that I don't give everything away now, but here are a few more. For the courts I am going with reverseable, but not in the traditional sense.
I'll make sure to keep posting updates in lieu of actually launching this.

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
It's great that you're still working on this one.
You'll have to excuse my gutter brain, but to me; on the Queen of Diamonds, what seems to be the man's pants on one side looks like the bride is wearing a white corset and a white thong on the other. I was thinking to suggest flipping either side so the colors blend into each other perhaps? Or you can go with an easier approach and put a bar on the split, but I don't think that would look as good.
iPad Photoshop time! Just a rough idea:

Thanks Sprouts!
And that's a great idea Eoghann. I was a bit iffy about the blend of colours, switching it to have the same colours flow through works well; I hadn't thought of that, thanks!

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
Fud - If you can put a foot near someones's ear you have graduated. YOu don't need a diagonal bar to separate the courts. Emmanuel are you listening? That is a good QoD card.
If your suit index was bigger, it would be a better to see the Dimond from a distance.

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
yeah, he was meant to have fallen in the snow, but it looks pretty silly now... Fixed it to something a bit more reasonable:
On the plus side, 11/12 courts, 3/4 aces, 31/36 numbers, 2/2 jokers and 1/1 backs done and dusted If I wasn't waiting for the Prism, this might be ready to go in a few weeks. I just need to teach myself patience...

Re: ACTIVE playing cards
This will be my last teaser for a while - I don't want to give away too much too quickly, and I get so excited when I finish the design that I have to really watch myself to not give it all away at once! All the designs are done (except a special few), but I will hold off posting until closer to the release date. I will put out some more designs between now and January to whet your appetite, but not so much that 90% of the deck is spoiled before the campaign
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the 'Faker King'. I don't think it's hard to guess what story this one is telling
**I just realised that a bit of his hand is cut off - I'll fix that later

Fud - JUst noticed your KoH and 8oH has a black rank of card. Are you planing on making the rank red for the Spades and Clubs?
Edit: Just noticed your 4oC, 40S, and your 7oS. I like ppl who break the rules. Usually, the rank is same color as the suit...

Thanks Sprouts! I had completely missed that! I haven't gone through and done a careful checklist review of them all yet, but yes, they will be changed to match the colour of the suit
