Card Manufacturer Info Megathread

Unread post by hsbc »

I've been meaning to make a thread like this to collect behind-the-scenes info about how much various companies charge for card manufacturing. I'm especially interested in the non-public info, like how much USPCC and Cartamundi charge -- I imagine there's a sliding scale based on quantity, stock, etc.

Does anyone know details about the following?
  • What are the models and manufacturers of the actual machines used to make the cards?
  • Who supplies paper stock for each manufacturer?

Make Playing Cards (MPC), Hong Kong (parent, QP Group [雋思集團])

Lots and lots of options on their Custom Game Cards page:
Material options:

S27 (FSC-certified) promotional card stock with blue core (smooth finish)
S30 (FSC-certified) professional standard card stock with blue core (smooth finish)
S33 superior smooth card stock with black core (smooth finish)
M28 standard linen card stock with blue core (linen finish)
M29 BGM linen card stock with blue core (linen finish)
M30 magic quality card stock with black core (linen air light finish) - Minimum order quantity of 1000 required for this option
M31 casino quality card stock with black core (linen finish)

A35 thick standard card
P10 100% premium white plastic card stock
E27 eco-herbage sustainable card stock
M32 is (I think) the "preferred" stock from them, which is priced as follows -- MOQ is 1,000:
1000-2499 .......... $3.30
2500-4999 ........ $2.30
5000-7499 ......... $1.90
7500-9999 ........ $1.70
10000-12499 ....... $1.50
12500-14999 .......... $1.35
15000+ .......... $1.24

MPC is a division of QP Group, which owns several other made-on-demand type businesses:

I'm not sure which of their two factories makes cards, but they're both in China
We operate two key production sites in Dongguan and Heshan, Guangdong with an aggregate factory area of 108,000 square meters. Our production sites are equipped with a comprehensive range of machinery for end-to-end paper product manufacturing including pre-press, printing, post-press processes (such as coating, lamination, foil stamping, embossing, debossing, spot UV, glittering, die-cutting, binding, envelope-making) and assembly.

I recommend anyone considering making playing cards to buy MPC's sample pack: https://www.makeplayingcards.com/design ... ample.html
I have it in front of me and I would honestly pick M30 or M32 for a deck I was making. Unfortunately, they require a MOQ of 1,000. Next best if you want to make a prototype might be to go with the M31.

MPC will release their own decks to showcase some of their capabilities: https://www.kickstarter.com/profile/mak ... ds/created

I really like their Castle deck to showcase their E27 Eco Herbage card stock: https://www.makeplayingcards.com/mpc-ca ... cards.aspx
