Is there any indication of what that image is on the back of the Waddington Jase?
It's rather bizarre. The feathered figure seems to have bird feet that are grasping the arms of the man.

Its a Painting by Herbert Draper called the lament for icarus (1898)

i think those are arm straps for the wings and not birds feet

I mistook the woman behind his head to be the owner of the wings. Now it's just another painting of nude figures with the excuse of a classical subject  , not that anyone minds ;) .

I had no prior knowledge of the decks when i traded for them..they were just decks that i didn`t have. After opening them i can see why you like the americanas, very cool courts especially the Queens. I do like the Party animal pack the best though as the courts are fun.
Here`s a kickstarter i got this morning. Jody Eklunds "Golden Spike"

Next a Caspari Double deck printed by Carta mundi. the backs show some wallpaper designs by William Morris.

Just saw that De la Rue Canasta set with the wheel backs. I wonder if those are contemporary with the USPCC and Piatnik wheel backs? A popular form that crossed borders.

Hiya Dazzelguts :D
The Ace on those cards is dated 1950-1955, around the time of the Big Canasta craze. The Backs are probably a reprint of an earlier goodalls back design, although i can`t find any in the WWPCM ,there are some very similar, for example d01521r063.
Goodalls had dealings in America & Canada in the late 1800 into the early 1900`s, most notably with Victor Mauger. It made great business sense to take what he was seeing in the American playing card Market (i.e the popularity of the "Bicycle" brand) and bringing those ideas home to the British Market.
There are many backs that are similar in design to those of the Bicycle brand which are dated 1900-1910 (i can`t find any before that date) which can be seen in the WWPCM on pages d01521r1900 & d01521r1910

Thanks Jase :)

I really like d01521r063, the one that is similar to yours but has the bike frame in it.

There are Acorn backs and Leaf backs as well.

Wonder how the wheels crossed over to Piatnik in Austria. I tried looking around Piatnik in WWPCM but ran out of time and had to give up. They have made so many cards.

An all Waddingtons post today to mark my 1st anniversary of being a member of UnitedCardists. :D
Fist up a double deck with a groovy paisley pattern box.
703.JPG
Next up a couple of Mastabar Belt Fastener Co advertising decks.
704.JPG
Another advertising deck.
705.JPG
And the last deck has no tuck box or jokers but is very exciting for me. The Ace shown is a Variation of the anonymous Ace used for The high-end decks waddingtons produced in the early 1930`s. This variation with the stripes inside the Ace was only used in 1935 and as the only example i have (or have seen so far) will do until i can "Trade up".

Hi there ecNate :D
Those decks were produced by Carta Mundi for "Heritage Toy & Game Co Ltd". Heritage do a large range of what i call educational cards, Each card has a picture with a name & location.Heritage has a huge range which can be seen here http://a.trionfi.eu/WWPCM/WWPCM/uk/heritage.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Here are some photos (I hope these help)
100_2428.JPG
100_2429.JPG
Here`s a Venice Simplon Orient Express deck i`ve been looking out for. The "World of Playing Cards" has this listed as being produced by Waddingtons, but the WWPCM has it listed as being produced by Piatnik (d03749).
There are no makers marks anywhere on the cards i can see, so must say unknown maker for now.
100_2412.JPG
And last today a Beautiful Britain pack from Waddingtons.

Sadly they are just the usual photo on a card souvenir kind of cards, I was hoping for more artistic style, but the theme is strong enough for me that I'll have to keep an eye out for these. Thanks for sharing, cheers!

That's an interesting puzzle about the origin of the VSOE deck.

I would argue for Waddington over Piatnik, for 3 reasons:

1 - Piatnik tend to have their logo formed into the lids of their plastic boxes, and I can't see one here.
2 - Waddington owned Grimaud briefly and has a connection there, and the earlier 1984 VSOE deck was printed by Grimaud. (perhaps that argues for Grimaud/France-Cartes actually being the printer?)
3 - WWPCM has been wrong before. No criticism intended of Mr. Sukhorukov, the sheer size of WWPCM means many decks are not well researched.

None of that is concrete evidence though, so I sent a message to WOPC asking how they came to the conclusion of Waddington as the source.

Hi there Dazzelguts :D
Yes i think your right.
At least the two sources give the same date of Manufacture as 1990.
After comparing the Indices and the number cards to those used by Waddingtons at the time, they seem identical.
And also the plastic box (if original) has Made in England stamped on the underside.

I`m interested to hear what WOPC says on the matter ,thanks for sending a message.
I`ll wait before i post the scans in worldwide :D

Simon Wintle was kind enough to respond to my question, and he indicated that the indices were his biggest reason for placing it with Waddingtons. The plastic box could very well be original to it too, since it's from 1990, so I think Waddingtons is a safe assumption.
